Highland Park Opens New School Based Enterprise

Our school had an old training room, and we had a vision. We were going to turn this unused space into a new DECA store and make it the hub of Highland Park High School. However, requiring not only TLC but total demolition, we knew that this was going to be a challenge. We started at the end of the 2016-2017 school year and worked all throughout the summer power washing, changing tiles, moving cabinets, painting walls, etc. Thanks to the help and support of our DECA members and school staff, we were able to keep costs low by doing all of the renovations ourselves. On top of that, we reached out to local businesses and families, landing us free furniture and appliances. Though the process was strenuous, we ended up with a beautiful new store that sells everything from school merchandise to iced coffee all throughout the school day. This store is a testament to what determination and student collaboration can create.
